spreader for me. I suspect it is by both rhizome and seed as it has jumped 
beds and filled in spaces along a 50-foot long bed.  That's over 10 years, so 
it's not a terrible nuisance, although I'm about to get rid of some of them 
to make room for other things.  I like this plant a lot.  And they say it is 
the only flower stalk that opens from the top down.
