Kris, thanks for the tip, but it's been my experience that a one trick
solution rarely works for deer.  Gardening successfully in deer country
without a fence involves a full management plant that includes careful
selection of plants to grow, use of deterrents of various sorts at the right
times and in the right way, and of course, understanding deer habits and
food preferences and how they vary with the seasons.  I do workshops on the
topic.  Tobacco dust (highly toxic by the way) might work as part of one's
arsenal, but I wouldn't want to inhale it or get it near my organic
vegetable garden.
