Perilla frutescens is an herb. I had understood used by the Japanese; maybe
all or most Asians. No, I have never eaten it. Someday. In any event, I have
it and love it. Yes a skillion seedlings but only if you allow the flower
heads to mature. CUT THEM OFF! I do and besides would rather pull out some
Perilla than a Dandelion or some other weed. I really like the plant with
its maroonish leaves with green undertones. Can be used to compliment,
partner with many in the perennial garden.
Same is true of Tovara/Persicaria 'Painters Palette' Wonderful in the shade
garden, though this one is a perennial here in zone 6b. Just cut off the
flower heads in August.
Maybe I'll write a book......."Gardening With Invasives"
Must go now to hoe a few Perillas that got away: the book will have to wait.
