Nancy,
From my experience oriental poppies dislike 'wet feet' for any period of
time. I had several dozen one quart containers in the greenhouse in a
ground bed which had poor drainage when I watered them. They grew slower
and were not as strong as the containers in a drier, more well drained
area. You might want to aerate the soil around the plants to see if that
helps dry the soil out any faster and allows air to get to the roots.
