mulch, which of course holds ice and water around the plants and rots them.
She recommends marsh hay (which they sell in the fall).

I like to mix leaves in when preparing a bed, but I have recently discovered
the many virtues of pine straw as a mulch - it lets air and water through and
doesn't mat down and lasts a long time.
