Wow- your wisteria is a problem- I'd be afraid not to plant it now given the
rate of growth. hopefully you can get it out without too much trauma and
maybe transplant it in the early evening so that it has at least the first 8
hours in coolness to settle in.
Even our usually boring weather has been odd this year. It rained well into
May (usual for us- some years we don't have any rain past March)and was
relatively cool. I even lost my first attempt a watermelon and cucmber
seedling to the cool and dampness. But then this week- summer came- mid90's
for the past few days. So- think it's safe to try a second set of melons.
Last weekend I finally got the last of the new perennials planted in the
ground. I'm slowed down for the past few weeks dealing with the annoyance
of a broken finger (Thankfully I can take the splint off and wash it when
I'm done!) Most of the new plans look OK- oddly, one salvia has been a bit
wilty but I think It'll make it. A different salvia has something eating
it- looks like slug damage, but I didn't think slugs ate salvia. I've had
very few other pests so far this year. I did a preimptive strike and
release 2 rounds of ladybugs early when I first noticed aphids and white
flies- and now have almost no aphids, but still find lots of ladybugs
hanging around. So- so far seem to be handling things. Oh- my sweetpeas (I
planted last fall)- have gone insane. I've repeatedly tied them up to the
fence, but they are soo heavy in bloom they keep breaking through. Not sure
how much longer they'll survive with this heat anyway.
Good luck with the wisteria.

For many seasons the cinnamon has worked well for me to stop/prevent
damping off wilt in seedlings...Dont recall where I first saw this tip
but tried it and sure enough it works..Assume its because it comes from
high humidity tropics where it developed natural defenses to molds etc...
Sprinkled on the planting mix surface serves as a preventative(apply
good planting practices for seedlings of course)..As repeated watering
washes it away just re-sprinkle..Contact with seedlings is harmless, and
in fact I have reversed early stage damping off by backing off the water
and heavily applying the cinnamon..
The season here has been strange, frustrating, volatile(high
winds/thunderstorms),what with alternating warm,cool,to drastic
cold, then HOT is has been a gardeners nightmare(especially
veg.gardeners)..In less than 48 hrs we went from a low of 28f.to high
80s here in the 'ol back yard..Cooked the toms/peppers,thats with covers
too.Tomorrow will reach into the 90s mark, which I will take over the
sub-freezing any day..
The plus side is it verifies which plantings one can count on to roll
with the weather dished out in these
parts...Salvia,Allium,Petasites,Ligustrum, many of the natives,etc..
Question please...When would be a good time to transplant a Wisteria?
I have one planted in the greenhouse (directly in the ground not a
pot)which is growing leaps and bounds (maybe 5')and concerned that I
have waited too long to do get it in its permenant spot..Anybody know?
I dont want to leave it much longer as with increasing growth , its
root system will suffer greatly ..
I know how vigorous Wisteria is but given the current heat am in a
quandry just when is the 'right time'..Could I possibly loose it by
waiting til the fall.?Hum, how long is too long?
Hope Mother Nature is kind to you all and your gardens prosper.
