Marge,
I use a neem based pesticide called Azatin. There are several
recommendations on using neem based pesticides. They work only under
warm conditions. Warm water is best to use since the chemicals in neem
seem to work best in lukewarm water.
Neem concentrates such as Azatin have a shelf life of about 2 years it
seems. Maybe the product available to the homeowner isn't as
concentrated. Another thing about neem is that it does not kill insects
outright but disrupts their life cycle. I mix the Azatin with another
insecticide Talstar which has a low toxicity. I noticed when mixing the
Azatin with the Talstar it does a better job of controlling aphids.
While talking about aphids, I noticed something peculiar about their
feeding habits on geraniums. They prefer only the red flowering
varieties at least from my experience. They infested my red geraniums
this year but seemed to avoid the other colors.
