I dug out a neighbor's mature peonies 3 years ago and transplanted them to my yard. I thought for sure I killed them - that's how awful they looked.
Three years later they are bigger than when I originally dug them out and awesomely covered in buds. Patience is indeed a virtue when dealing with peonies.
