Sheila,
If the digitalis purp bloomed last year (Foxy for instance), you would be
lucky to get winter survival. Foxy overwinters for me at <5% in z5/6
central PA.
If you sowed a biennial type, like Excelsior, I am very surprised that
there was no survival. I have grown Excelsior lines in very dry beds, with
good success.
