The Foxy strain that I started last year actually made it through my winter
for the first time (contrary to popular belief, foxgloves do not always
self-seed successfully).  I'm thinking it was because the ground never
froze due to our very mild winter.  I had a bunch I started from seed and
transplanted in a very sheltered location in the ground outside.  Those
stayed beautiful all winter, resembling large hostas.  The few I had in an
unsheltered location outside did not fare as well during the winter, but
they have rebounded nicely this spring.

Both locations received no extra watering or pampering from me (a rule in
my garden is that if the plant has to be coddled, it's outta here!).  The
soil was an amended clay (some purchased top soil, 10-10-10, manure, and a
little leaf mold).  But like, I said, this was the first year I was
successful.  I still think it was the weather...
