Barb, 
I am growing Helianthus maximilianii, sounds like the plant you are
describing.
Mine grows under the pines, with lots of west afternoon sun, spreads like
crazy, grows 4-5' and has a cluster of small sunflowers on the top.  It is a
native plant.
