Re: lilacs

When my lilacs were smaller, I pruned off all dead blooms. Now they are
so big I would need scaffolding to get around one bush. I do have some
smaller hyb lilacs that I prune. We have a 100 ft row of 90 year old
lilacs on the north side of our driveway. I have a perennial bed between
it and the driveway. I'm always cutting back large branchs that lean
over it. I really need to take out some of the old wood but that is a
difficult project. So I do little each year. They usually bloom
profusely every spring.

I also have 3 Canadian hyb that bloom about 3 weeks after the the others
do. These bushes are thick and big. I'm going to do some thinning and
pruning after bloom this year to get them a little more controlled. I
also have a tree lilac that has taken a long time to grow. But I get a
few blooms in late June every year. It is white with very small leaves
and cherry tree looking bark. It is my latest blooming lilac.

In my experience, pruning off old blooms helps produce more blooms next
year. And I don't have so many darn seedlings!
