What colour are the flowers? Sounds like a late-flowering variety that
is just showing one two flowers early as well. I'd leave it alone now
from the pruning point of view, especially as you've had in for three
years. Next season, prune it down to at least 30cm from the ground,
that way you will get more flowers lower down and hopefully it will also
bush out by producing more stems.
