Re: soil too wet for planting?

The same thing is happening here in Kentucky. Hardly a week has gone by
without any rain since the end of winter.  The soil hasn't dried out;
however, my perennials were drying out in their pots while I waited and
some started to grow roots through the drainage holes. Instead of
stressing them unduly, I decided to plant them out in the garden anyhow (in
a couple of cases, it was still sprinkling while I was working).

Well, so far so good. Everything has taken hold thanks to the rain and
cool temps and has thrown up new growth. I've noticed no significant
compaction of the soil, but I was sure not to pack it down too much when I
transplanted my new purchases. I really think that it would have to be a
judgement call for the gardener -- only you know your soil and garden well
enough to know the drainage.

Just my opinion.
