Perilla frutescens -- Shiso, Beefsteak Plant or Purple Perilla (all common
names for this) is a dark-purple leaved (and stemmed) annual plant that can
be kept to a bushy 1 1/2 feet with tipping. The leaves are matte purple,
very slightly hairy. Square stems and mint-like spires of pink flowers in
late summer to early fall here on Long Island, NY. It reseeds itself if
it's happy, but is otherwise well-behaved. Easy and fast from seed.
As a bonus, the leaves have a wonderful cinnamon-cumin flavor and are great
to use in asian cooking.
