It is a pretty plant and gives a nice grey/silver color effect. I have seen
photos of it used to outline the edge of a border and it's a nice effect. It
will spread pretty rapidly when it's happy and those who say it is easily
pulled are correct. It is also easy to transplant. I do have to giggle
though when I see a pot for sale in a nursery for $5 or more and want to
suggest to anyone buying it to just drop by and I'll give them some. I enjoy
its short-lived flower stalks too--the pink and silver combination is very
attractive to my eye.
In short, it can take over an area but it's very manageable. It can escape
and appear in other beds, but isn't rampant about it. In 8 years of growing
it, I have only had two plants emerge in beds other than where I planted it.
My main planting is in a shady and moist location and it helps choke out the
weeds. Some of the tougher grasses, though, can grow right through it and
then they're difficult to remove without also removing some stachys with it.
Weeds are in the eye of the beholder. Some "weeds" are even quite nice.
