My new water garden

I finally created a garden my husband is interested in! Last week I
made a "portable pond" out of a half barrel, flexible liner and
fountain. This week I put in water plants & we bought a few goldfish.
Okay, I don't think my partner in life is actually all that interested
in the plants, but he has taken charge of looking after the fish. I
love the look of our little pond on the deck. The flags & water lily
may not bloom this year, but hopefully I can overwinter them.

I especially hope I can keep the ridiculously expensive water lily alive
for a couple of years. I was given 2 (im)possible methods for
overwintering it since water lilies don't like having their roots
frozen:
1) Put it in a cool basement or garage and keep moist (but it may rot)
2) Dig it deep into the garden and mulch well

Well, I don't have a cool basement or garage and I'm not sure I can dig
deep enough to protect the lily from Ottawa's winter temperatures. Any
suggestions? BTW, I'm not interested in joining a water gardening
mailing list - I'm already fanatical enough about "normal" perennial
gardening!

Thanks,
