I have probably 25 or so peonies and when they get big enough to bloom, I
cut concrete reinforcing wire about 15 inches in diameter or so and maybe
28 - 30 inches tall and put around each plant. When they come up they grow
up through the wire and the wire sustains them even through heavy blooms and
rain. In the Spring when they begin coming up and we get a hard freeze after
they are a couple of inches tall, I put leaves or straw in the cage to
protect them and the cages keep the wind from blowing the mulch away. These
cages have always worked well for me. I make taller cages for my tomato
plants, too.
