I have some hoops, actually two-tiered ones, with the upper hoops being
perhaps 24" off the ground and the lower hoops about 16". They have four
legs. These seem to help. I've also seen grids, with 4" openings, that
look quite effective; I haven't gotten around to investing yet, but it's
time. Get these in place as soon as growth begins. If the flower heads
are particularly heavy, you may want to give them individual thin bamboo
stakes, and tie them in a few places. (I haven't done it yet, but I've
been tempted.)
My garden club had a tour of the Shakespeare garden in Central Park in
Manhattan last week, and saw peonies held up by hoops made of intertwined
grape vines. We joked about using our bittersweet and even forsythia to
make hoops to sell next year.
