Wintering over in Pots

Put two pots w/Stella d'oro day lilies in an unheated (but not freezing)
garage for the winter.  Am never sure how to water -- or withhold
water.  The day lilies are alive -- but were looking fairly anemic.  So
I cut them back severely -- so am sure they won't bloom now..

how should I have wintered them?
