That's probably where you had problems.  As Jean said, overwintering
outdoors is best, if possible.  Mother Nature knows just how much rain,
sun, wind, etc. to provide.  :)

With hardier plants, I usually just dump a big pile of mulch out back
and bury the pots to the brim.  Plants like hostas, daylilies, primroses,
etc. all come back fine for me.

With more tender plants I actually dig a hole in the ground and bury
them, pot and all.  I have rarely lost one, but when I have it's because
I buried a pot too deep for a plant that likes good drainage.
