So, are you saying not to put it on the foliage of plants that you want
to keep? :)
I accidentally knocked over my 20lb. container when I was using it in
the front of the house, so my lawn now has a lovely brown spot about
1.5' in diameter smack dab in the center.

I personally don't like distributing Preen regularly, but it's excellent
when the soil has been recently turned because a new bed is being
created, organic matter is being added and turned into the soil, etc.
As you all probably know, lots and lots of weeds germinate when the
soil is turned, so it can really be a lifesaver.
Thinking back, I remember that we used Preen in situations just like this
when I worked at the Morton Arboretum. The Ericaceous plants (mostly
Rhododendrons) were amended every few years to provide acid and organic
material, and the regular watering via irrigation would have made the
weeds unmanageable without anything like Preen.
