No, you don't know.  Diana didn't pay attention to the soil pH, fertility,
biological hazards (the goat) or proper watering.  No wonder she couldn't
grow anything.  What does Washington have that Idaho doesn't?  Blight,
fungi, nutrient-leaching moisture, summers too cool for sweet corn or
tomatoes, winter mild temperatures that lull you into thinking it never
snows, then it dumps two feet on you and paralyzes the city (collapsing
greenhouses).  The part of Washington I lived in had horrendous winds,
blowing month after month, summer or winter.  

I live in Idaho and I grow anything I wish.  She may have lived in
alkalinity, but I've added sufficient organic matter to neutralize my soil.
 I haven't seen inch-thick ice since we moved from Michigan.  Yes, the
skiing is great, both snow and water.  So's fishing, hunting, hiking,
birdwatching (how do raptors grab you?), mushrooming, and even gardening.
