Dear Bill,
Thanks for the advice about the columbines. I think I may let a
couple of the flowers go to seed so that if I get some seedlings, I
can move them in the spring to another garden I'm thinking about
starting. However, I will take your advice and cut back the rest to
the first leaf sprout.
Sorry you're having trouble with your shasta daisies. Since mine are
new this year, I've yet to see a bloom on them but they surely do
survive a lot of moving around. Maybe you should shift their location
a dozen times or so during the next two weeks. That seems to be doing
the job for me!
Valerie wrote us about her daughter's garden which I think is a great
idea. With a garden, something new is happening every day and that's
just the kind of thing kids love. Valerie, you mentioned that you
grow valerian. I planted three red valerian this spring and I must
say they are the sickest looking things I have ever seen. One is
obviously dead and the other two are spindly and bent over like an old
man. I'm not sure what they are supposed to look like but I'm
considering ripping them out at this stage of the game. Maybe I'll
move my shasta daisies into their place. My daisies have been in the
same spot for almost a week so they are probably already packing their
bags, getting ready to move on. If you have any suggestions about what
the valerians might like in the way of snack food, sunlight, water
etc. please let me know. Their days are numbered so you better get
back to me pretty quick for their sakes.
Thanks to all
