Jeanne, just dead heading will work. Use an old pair of scissors and just cut
off all of the seed heads and your columbine will continue to bloom for quite
a while. This also works for a number of perennials like shasta daisy.
However, columbine is considered to be a short lived perennial, about 3 years
is it's max. If you allow a few seed heads to ripen towards the end of their
blooming period (you'll know because the plant will start to slow down and
flower less and less) and let them self seed, you will always have
columbines. Of course, you won't know what color they are, but it is an easy
way to keep them coming. Donna Adams in Detroit
