I've had great luck with shasta 'Thomas Killen' (sp?) in Michigan (sandy
soil, cool nights, zone 5, good winter snow coverage generally). I planted a
few at least 7 years ago, they bloom profusely on strong stems, and they're
still with me. (do need to be divided occasionally).
But I've planted the same variety in Indianapolis, and had awful luck.
(clay soil, warm nights, zone 5, only occasional winter snow coverage).
Few blooms the first year, and didn't survive thru the winter. (tried them
twice, with same ppor results. Don't know which factors made the
difference...
