In my experience, Oriental poppies are not the easy plants the books
would have you believe. They like sandy loam, not too rich, and they
hate hot weather. They take 2-3 years to settle in before putting on
a show and that show definitely depends on the spring weather. Coolish,
rain but not too much, sun but not too hot. After 10 years of
struggling with them, my batch of Helen Elizabeth got wiped out by our
week of 106 degree heat one July a few years ago and I haven't replaced
them. But the few years they did perform, what a picture! They stopped
traffic, literally. Some day when I have more room, I'll definitely try
them again, perhaps with some afternoon shade. I combined their salmon
pink with Salvia 'East Friesland', spires of purply-blue, and in another
life,
I'll add some white or cream irises...
