Correct in my experience. Oriental poppies are quite a disappointment at least
for the first few years, because the blooms are gone within a couple of days, and
while they are getting established they don't seem to have many flowers. This is
my 3rd or 4th year with them, and finally it looks like there will be enough buds
to put on a decent display, even if only briefly. Last year I contemplated
tossing them all because they are so unattractive when not blooming, and the bloom
period is so brief. Fortunately I was too lazy to do much about it, and we'll see
if they convince me this year to let them stay. You might want to consider some of
the smaller perennial poppies. I like P. atlanticum which seems to be hardy here
in zone 4- yeah I know, last winter was nothing to judge by but I know somebody
who has grown them for a couple of years. Small plants, about 6", with orange
sherbet coloured flowers held about 18" off the ground. I haven't had any self
seed yet, but maybe next year. There are a couple of other interesting perennials
besides them, and the annual poppies are lovely too, if off topic on this list.
