Hi Marie,

It may depend on the type of Iris, whether it is the
"bearded" kind, or the Japanese Iris or Siberian Iris.  The
bearded Iris needs to have it's rhizomes planted almost at
the very surface of the soil to promote proper growth and
bloom.  Otherwise, you will get just some really nice
looking foliage.

However, I do have my doubts about Japanese Iris.  Mine is
showing wonderful foliage but no indication of blooms.  It
may be possible that our extremely mild winter and very warm
spring are contributors to the problem.
