I think you may have it! I bet the problem is a combination of late thaw
and hot summers.
The North side of the garage is the last place in the yard to thaw in the
spring. Normally the soil isn't warm there until late April but this year
has been unseasonably warm. Our summers are generally quite hot. Between
the late thaw and hot summers, they don't get much time in their optimum
growing conditions.

I have had a very large pacht under my north side deck for many years.
The ground does not thaw out until Mid April many years and it dark and very
dry.
The lily of-the-valley have grown into a thick carpet, with just a little
help from me. Some water now and then, and I have thrown in some dirt onto of
them. Other wise they were growing threw a thin layer of small rock.
Last year we had a nasty wind storm and my deck and privacy fence blew down.
The lily of the valley burned up and the weed grasses moved in.
Since I have no time to work on the yard until July. I have kinda kissed the
plants good buy.
It's too bad too, I could have been a millionaire potting up all those plants
and selling them. They were a dense carpet 8 feet by 5 feet wide.
I better stop talking about the Lilly of-the valley before I get depressed.
