Allium & Mulch Aesthetics

     <<Most likely its frost damage...>>

This is first year for me and alliums, but I could ditto that. The
alliums were fine, then hard frost one night a couple of weeks ago,
next day, browned tips, and since then brown has been slowy traveling
down the length of the foliage. The nite of the frost I went to put an
overturned bucket on top of them, but they were already too tall. oh
     well.

On another topic newly of interest to me:

A friend of mine had commented recently that orange shredded bark is
     really gouache.

Last week I top dressed all beds with a generous inch of composted
manure & hummus, then mulched for the first time with buckwheat hulls.

The buckwheat hulls were slightly less expensive than cocoa hulls,
plus I hate chocolate and the cocoa did exude a slight scent, I went
     with the buckwheat.

So now that I've tried the hulls, I'll have to say, to my eye, the
hulls are aestheticly far superior. The look is simple yet refined,
and because they are so subdued, the plants have the stage.

Anyone else on preferences? And most importantly, how about different
mulches in terms of their functionality, not looks?
