In response to your question about how to divide hostas, this is probably
heresy to true hosta folks, but I use alks, but I use an old bread knife. I
find that as long as I retain a little bit of root, and keep the hosta well
watered for the first few weeks, it will survive the most brutal of
divisions. Alternately, you can just dig the whole clump out, position the
shovel tip on theside of the clump (it is easier to divide that way than
going through the top) and jump on it with all your weight. Again, this may
be heresy, but it works.
