Gardener's hands

Yes, you can tell a gardener by the hands, but you can minimize the
problem. I use gloves when I work, but a lot of times I like to feel the
dirt with my bare hands (especially when doing some detailed work). One
thing I do is put on vaseline before working outside -- rub in a good
amount. Protects your hands from the worse and the dirt comes off easier.
I've scraped my fingernails across old bars of soap before going outside to
work so that dirt doesn't get under them, but it doesn't stay there very
long.

Nothing seems to work better than the vaseline and a good washing with a
nail brush afterwards. I also use some of the greatest cream: Gardener's
Therapy made by Crabtree & Evelyn. This stuff comes in a tube and is
instantly absorbed into the skin leaving it soft as butter without the
greasiness of vaseline (it's also great on elbows, knees, and feet).

My mom's manicurist says bleach weakens the nails. Use with caution!
Keeping the nails polished helps to keep them strong. I use a skin-tone
color in the summer to help keep them neat and it gives the illusion of
them being longer than they really are.

But nothing's going to keep me out the garden.
