Re: Cerinthe major redux

	Hello, all--
As usual, plant trends really run in cycles! Some
friends and I visited the Carmel Garden Show a couple of weekends ago,
and saw Cerinthe major used in several of the display gardens. In a
couple of the displays, it was paired with euphorbias. The purply-green
and chartreuse combination was eye-popping, to say the least. As soon as
we could, we headed straight for the vendors area and searched
single-mindedly for the specialty nursery that had Cerinthe for sale (but
alas, had sold out of the Verbascum "Helen Johnson" already). We pushed
through the crowd (well, 3 or 4 other people,at least!),
snatched up our little four-inch pots and triumphantly toted them back to
the car. Relief! We had our treasure securely in hand... No Nordstrom
sale shoppers could have been prouder.
Today, I headed to Santa Cruz to pick up a couple of new
salvias at our local garden center and as I cruised the aisles, I was
suddenly head-on with the purply-green fleshy leaves of... Cerinthe. Lots
of them, in fact, in gallon cans. I'm sure they have been in stock many
times, but of course, I had never noticed them until they were
spotlighted by creative designers.
Ah, well, our little four-inchers are thriving...
						Cheers,
						Claudia in Davenport,Ca.
