I'm in zone 5 too, SE Wisconsin.  I had an Asclepias tuberosa that I
thought was just clumps of brown stalks. This week,  I went out to
remove it, and lo and behold, the shoots were just below the surface of
the mulch!

I was quite pleased, so keep the faith!
