Dot -
I have both Datura and Brugmansia and as the last person said datura has
outward facing flowers and also produces seed pods....you can also find
double and triple blooms, sometimes with a combination of the purple and
yellow.
Brugmansia is my favorite....they do not produce seed but can be reproduced
easily from hard wood cuttings. In my experience the yellow is the most
fragrant, especially at night. Mine are in full sun and when we have a
milder winter and early spring they will give a blooming show in the spring.
Mine seem to have to have some size to them before they bloom. In the months
of July and August they require more water and tend to wilt in the heat of
the day...don't worry, they will perk up again at night and by the fall they
will give a show you will enjoy as well as your neighbors. I have the
yellow, peach-versicolor, white and tangerine......in my opiniun the
peach-versicolor gives the best overall show. The blooms start off cream and
turn a deep peach. If the brugmansia doesn't get at least 1/2 day sun you
will not get the blooms. If you do want to put into the ground (for faster
growth) take your cuttings before the 1st frost....you can even root a
cutting that is 2-3 feet long. They will grow fast and you will have a full
size plant the next year. Only trick to root cuttings is to let the wound
heal for a day before putting into rooting medium - I use 1/2 vermiculite and
1/2 peat. This is a plant that you can share every year....your neighbors
will appreciate that.
Good luck and you will love this plant.
