Louise,
may I suggest that you purchase the book "The Well-Tended Perennial
Garden"? I'm sure that you can order from Amazon.com if you cannot find it
in the UK. I am actively using many of the suggestions in this book (you
should see all of the bookmarks!) this growing season. The author goes
into great detail about the whole deadheading/pinching process, including
specific help on certain perennials. I haven't seen this type of detailed
information in any other book I have -- and I have quite a few. The author
has long narratives about what particular look you'd like for a specific
perennial to have and how to achieve it through selective pruning, cutting,
and/or deadheading. There's a few pictures, mostly color plates of the
differences her techniques can make for a perennial vs. an un-touched one.
She gives examples from her own garden as well.
Once you have the book, you'll wonder what you used to do without it.
