Re: brugmansia

Heather - I'm not sure about the gasoline thing but I do know a little about
the brugmansia....I'm in zone 9 so my winters are primarily tame, however,
two years ago we did have a winter with 5 straight nights with below freezing
and brug lived through it fine. After the frost, I cut back 1/3 (just to
make it easier to cover) then whenever we were going to get freezing weather
I cover the bottom 2' feet of the plant with hay then wrap with burlap. I
have never lost one yet.....I even save the hibiscus this way.

Frost won't kill your brugmansia but you will have die back....keep in mind
that when you go to "clean-up" you brugmansia will have hollow stems......do
not do any major pruning until the new growth is above the die back. In my
experience if I clean up before the growth takes over and continue to have
die back (maybe from the hollow stems and the air).

Also remember - brugmansia's are very easy to root from "hard" cuttings.
I've even been able to take a 3' foot forked piece and root it in a 5 gal
tub. I kept it behind the garage are warmer days and in the garage for the
colder nights. I had very fast growth in the spring, even a few blooms.
Since I didn't loose the mother plant by protecting with hay and burlap I was
able to give this nice size plant to a friend.

Heather - I am not as knowledgeable as some of the gardeners on the list, I
just am sharing my experience and what worked for me with these great
brugmansias. I now have six different kinds.......they are all alive and
well.
