I had a similar experience this year with my compost pile. Very long story,
Reader's Digest version:
After working out there relayering earlier this year, within two days I had
sores in my nose, headache, burning when I breathed. Went to the doctor,
they did a culture, I had a "weird" bacterial infection that they had to get
a microbiologist to identify -- it turned out to be related to the
soil/compost.
I had two courses of antibiotics, the last one at 1000 mg a day for two
weeks, and if that didn't work I was going to have to go to the hospital for
antibiotics via IV -- thank God the last course worked. It was a long,
about 6 week healing process.
The SAD PART is apparently this is not that uncommon with city folks --
those raised in the country have often built an immunity to these bacteria.
I do have asthma and allergies so I was a prime candidate, plus being a city
girl and never composting before...
Coincidentally, a microbiologist on another list I'm on was commenting that
when he's doing "tests" with this stuff he had to "import" people from out
of his rural state, because they had an immunity to it. He was warning us
all to be careful with compost and was surprised it wasn't more often
discussed (some of the risks).
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

For mine is a little old fashioned garden where the flowers come
together to praise the Lord and teach all who look upon them to do
likewise.
