Hi again. I guess I just feel like chatting today. When we first moved into
our house my husband started a compost pile by simply piling leaves and grass
cuttings, veggie peels, egg shells, etc. into a corner of the yard. Well I
started to garden and that pile of mess just wasn't happening for me. I
purchased a rubbermaid one, simple to make it look better. When I went to
move the "compost" that he created to continue the composting in the proper
location...what I found underneath was "black gold"........I am no expert, I
can only offer you the information about what we put into our compost and
what I've read.
I understand that when you are first starting you should try to layer things
in....such as newspaper, grassclipping, veggie peel...repeat. I've never
used the newspaper or been organized enough to actually layer things. I
would suggest that you start with grass clippings and maybe some leaves.
When you make dinner and peel carrots or take off the first few leaves of the
lettuce you put those into your compost pile to. Things you DO NOT put into
the compost is meat products...no fat, bones, trimmings, etc. And you DO NOT
put any dairy products, however egg shells are fine. If your composter has
an open bottom the worms will find there way into it. If you have a turning
composter I do not think that the worms are necessary.
Now how important this next thing is...I don't know....my husband insist that
I keep the compost moist. He says that it speeds up the process. So when we
do not have any rain....I water the compost. I'm sure that when you get more
post about the composting procedure we will find out if that is true.
Oh - also...never, never put in deseased parts of plants (ie. mildew leaves
or black spot) those are to be put into the trash.
Well good luck composting. You will certainly love the end results.
