Kemberly,
You know you will get support from me on this issue! When I first started
gardening, I knew nothing about gardening here in the hot, humid climate of
Texas, being originally from the North. I was fortunate to find a small, mom
and pop place not far from me, and the valuable information I got there was
priceless. Barbara would steer me away from the plants that would not
perform for me in a given situation, and would save "special" plants that she
knew I would be interested in. I've learned a lot about gardening since
then, but would have had many disappointments without the initial guidance
Barbara and John provided.
The service at a small mom and pop cannot be matched by the Lowes, Walmarts,
etc. Barbara once sold me three crepe myrtles that were supposed to be
purple. They turned out to be the watermelon red, which I hate only because
EVERYONE has them. When I mentioned this to her, she laughed because she
knew I hated the watermelon ones. A week later, she called me to come by
because she had something for me. When I arrived, there were three purple
crepe myrtles put aside for me, larger than the original ones I purchased,
which she gave to me in apology for selling me the wrong one. You won't find
this at a Walmart!
I have also found that the small Mom/Pop places carry the more unusual
varieties as well, usually at a good price too for a nice, established plant.
You certainly get my vote on the Mom and Pops!
