have are now "history!" Its such a shame! In the name of progress, we have
gone a step (or more) backwards. I've forgotten the percentages, but very
few NEW businesses survive. Chain stores are nearly impossible to compete
with.
Transplanting by hand is slow, tedious, back and neck breaking work
and "labor intensive" compared to the commercial equipment which is initially
expensive but cheaper and faster to use. Can you imagine a Machine that
Transplants all those tiny plugs? Its amazing! Although not quite as
amazing as machines that handle bread dough on a massive scale!
How about a Word from some of our Nurserymen on this list? I'm
assuming you are all relative small. How do you manage to compete??
We just lost my favorite "small grower" which I will miss terribly.
I could go there in Feb/March, buy small plants and take cuttings. Illegal,
possibly yes, but they need the business that time of year and I always went
back to get as many other things as I could during their peak selling time.
But I don't know anyone anymore who grows their own bedding plants
these days. I still do but had quit for a long time, largely due to working
full time and the easy accessibility of them for sale. Doing it again
because I am trying to grow perennials from seed and annuals that aren't
available as bedding plants.
Best Wishes to you all --
