Yep...think you're right. It's not that you get rebloom, tho', you get
continual bloom if deadheaded....they just keep producing flowers. I
didn't know this until a few years ago when someone on Gardens-L posted and
I gave it a whirl on one plant and LO! continual - tho' smaller -
blooms...amazing what you learn on the net!
There are a tremendous amount of colors and varieties...personally, I'm not
nuts about the doubles as the charm of this flower, IMO, is the form. But,
be aware that they are incredibly promiscuous and if you grow several forms
and let them self seed, eventually you will end up with mongrels, likely
reverting to a range of pinks from near white to very dark. Not that these
aren't nice - it's basically what I've got - but you need to know this so
you won't be upset when your special one disappears and something else
takes its place.
Found a rather nice white with dark pink markings in the form of faint
lines toward the base this spring...hadn't noticed that one before. Have
had a strain of navy blue that has seeded true for years and this year only
2 plants showed up, one of which is more purple...so that is likely on its
way out.
I find they last only two or three years as individual plants; I hardly
notice this, since I allow them to seed where they wish, so always have
some somewhere. Lovely children - garden wouldn't be a garden without
Columbine!!
