Well, I have perfected the gardener's flamingo stance (dance?)....place one
foot in an unoccupied spot - extend other foot out (gracefully) to balance;
bend and grab offending weed; look over shoulder to see what's there and do
a hop to get extended foot on ground outside of bed....repeat as
necessary...
If I'm feeling particularly limber, I can grab more than one offending weed
without falling over.
Other option is placing a few bits of flagstone or brick or a bit of board,
here and there, basically hidden by foliage, but findable by the acute
gardener - preferably large enough to get both feet on so you can perfect
the gardener's squat wherein you have both feet in a very small spot and
squat down so you can reach all around you to get what needs doing
done...without falling over on some precious plant. Those whose knees
don't permit the squat can perfect the gardener's bend from the same kind
of location. This does not permit room for a collecting bucket or basket,
thus, you get to practice holding same in one hand above plants while
pulling and filling with other hand (develops upper arm strength) or you
get to practice the gardener's toss, wherein you pull whatever and heave it
so that it lands outside the bed to be picked up later (perfects aim).
After a while, beds can get so nicely congested that few weeds have a
chance:-) Pruning is always a challenge in a crowded bed, however, so you
generally get to practice one of the gardener's dance routines:-)
