This is an interesting discussion in terms of contrasting the conditions
around the country that hollyhocks do/do not like. And it makes me wonder
what exactly it IS that hollyhocks don't like about Donna's yard. Several
people seem to be concerned about hollyhocks not liking heat and humidity,
and therefore suggest watering them heavily through the summer. Seems to
me that in a humid environment, their need for water would not be terribly
great (high humidity = low transpiration = low water loss = little need for
supplemental water), leaving heat as the remaining concern. But here in
hot and DRY southern California, hollyhocks make it through the summer with
no additional water beyond what the perennials get, which in my yard is not
a whole heck of a lot. So if humidity is not a great problem, and heat
doesnt always impact them negatively, I wonder whether there is something
else going on for Donna. Maybe it's soil.....???
