Someone told me that on Martha Stewart, she said if you grabbed a hunk of the leaves at the base, and then cut them off ABOVE where you are holding them at the base, they would be fine. Then let those few inches of leave die back. It doesn't help solve planting over them, but you could get some of the foliage gone.
