Donna -
I actually acquired love-in-the-mist by accident. My husband bought a
chipper/shredder at Sears hardware and he had my daughter with him (about 1
1/2 yr old at the time) and she picked up one of those "wildflower" seed
cartons with a butterfly on it....well the manager was so touched by her
knowledge of butterfly's, at such a young age, that he gave his the
(cylinder) carton of seeds.
Well - together we poured them into a bare spot in my garden and to my
surprise a few things did come up and survive...one being the
love-in-the-mist. Well - when I first saw the foliage I thought it was a
weed for sure but I waited all through the fall/winter to just see what this
"weed" might do. When warmer days arrived the threadleafed/feathery looking
plant began to grow and then to bloom....It had white, pink and blue (baby
blue) blooms that were simple but nice and to follow is a very round seed
pod. Well ever since that fall I've had love-in-the-mist pop up somewhere
out there. The plant alone is nothing truely special but in a mass or mixed
in with others it does come as a nice surprise. Last year I had a couple
right under my larkspur and delphiniums....wonderful hand that nature has.
Love-in-the-mist's botantical name is: Nigella, catalog says it is in the
Ranunculaceae family--althought to me it looks nothing like a
ranuncula....blooms are a bit similiar to borage. I've seen the seeds at
most garden centers and, of course, WalMart. They are usually in most
catalogs....T & M has them in their 1999 catalog, page 117. This is not a
spectactular annual but it can be a nice little addition. Once you have it I
think you will probably always have a surprise in the spring somewhere in
your garden.
