That sounds like what chipmunks and groundhogs do here in my NE Illinois
garden....squirrels often dig up bulbs and they love my mother's recently
potted lilies.
Sounds like you may have multiple pest problems as they do usually enter
the Have-A-Heart traps. The worst for me is the groundhog as he's an
indes-criminate eater - loves everything I lay on his table. Fencing and dogs
is the
only deterent I've found.
