I'm having rabbit problems big-time this year. The first time in 3 years
of gardening at this location. It has destroyed some of my Asiatic and
Oriental lilies; it removed all the buds from some and nipped off a large
portion of the stem. Nibbled one balloon flower down to the ground. Made
huge inroads into my aster foliage.
First I sprayed the plants with pepper spray, to no avail. Next I
sprinkled dried blood, with limited success. Next I set out a
have-a-heart, but it didn't enter. Now I have a much larger have-a-heart
set out; it did not enter the trap last night. Hope springs eternal.
After the trap is out a few days, if the rabbit doesn't get caught, I will
put the trap away and distribute some dog droppings in the garden; someone
suggested that the scent may trick the rabbit into thinking there is a
large, fierce dog nearby and that will keep it (the rabbit) away. All who
have had varmint damage have my deepest sympathy. I am heartsick over what
this animal has done to my garden, particularly what it did to the lilies;
none of the ones it attacked will bloom this year and some of them have so
little stem/foliage left I don't even know if they will present anything
next year.
