Hello everyone,
Last year was the first year for my poppies.(papaver
water babies). They were gorgeous..all 3 flowers but
I was dismayed to discover that each blossom only
lasted a day. This year I have 6 buds on the plant.
The first one opened 6 days ago and is still blooming,
as beautiful as the first day. I can't understand it.
What did I do right.? Everyone on the list assured
me last year that it was normal for the blooms to only
last one day. That same question arises again about
deadheading. Last year I did not let them go to seed.
I deadheaded each bloom as soon as it died. Could
that account for such robust flowers this year? If so
I will surely dead head these again as soon as they
finish blooming. I am also going to cut back all the
basal growth as soon as they are through blooming.
(This was mentioned in the Well Tended Perennial
Garden).
